Oh London Is A Fine Town was written by Thomas D’Urfay , a writer of political and court songs. The song cheekily describes the investiture of the Lord Mayor and was first published in 1707. The melody appears in The Beggars Opera as ‘Oh Polly is a Sad Slut’.

The Lord Mayor in 1707 was William Withers, a member of the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers.

The lead vocal is by Johanna Marshall. Johanna toured internationally as a member of the Swingle Singers for several years. She has appeared in the 2010 Prom concert dedicated to the music of Rogers and Hammerstein and at the performance of the Genesis Suite given by the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican.

The section of the song that starts with the line, 'Then out came the carver and boldly falls to work...' is a new melody written by Simon McKechnie to form a contrasting bridge section.

The outro melody is the tune 'Cuckolds All a Row' that is referred to in the last line of the lyrics.
